Turbos are intricate and precise components, but not actually all that complicated or difficult to understand. Turbine

The turbine is the most crucial component on the exhaust side of things. Essentially, the turbine is a sort of impeller that spins when exhaust pressure is applied to it. The turbine spins the shaft, which turns the compressor on the other side of the shaft.

Compressor

The compressor on the other end of the shaft is very similar to the turbine, with one critical difference. Whereas the turbine is powered by pressure, the compressor creates pressure. It forces fresh air into the engine, which is where the term “forced induction” comes from.

Center Housing

The center housing is where you’ll find the bearings and the shaft that rides on them. It separates the turbine and compressor from each other, and has an inlet for both coolant and oil, used to cool and lubricate the turbo.
